BIG NEWS: I HAVE AN AGENT!!!
Big day, kids. Big day. I’m beyond thrilled to announce that I’m officially represented by Trinica Sampson-Vera of New Leaf Literary.
On my 100th day in the querying trenches, Trinica and I hopped on a call, and I immediately knew.
When Trinica reached out, I already had another offer in hand. I had over a dozen fulls in circulation, and after I sent my “I have an offer” nudge, EVEN MORE came flooding in.
I thought the first offer was going to be it. Offer 1 came from an agent I’d hit it off with at a conference over the summer. Offer 1 matched my freak and had an absolutely killer track record of getting big deals, and I was so excited to work with them.
But then Trinica responded to my offer notification with contagious enthusiasm. She blasted through my manuscript over a weekend, shooting me little messages along the way that made me squeal in my local bookstore and sweat through more than a couple of shirts.
Before we even got on The Call, I could tell Trinica loved my story as much as I did. She understood my characters and their motives, and she had super thoughtful responses when I pressed her on what she loved most. Trinica listened to my vision for the world I’d built. She heard what I wanted out of my career and shared my dream of telling queer stories in a way I genuinely didn’t expect to find on this journey.
Agents are human. We sometimes forget that when we’re in the querying trenches.
In talking to Trinica, though, I was reminded of how human this industry is, and I remembered something important I learned during my agency days:
The way someone presents themselves to you is how they’ll present your work to the world.
Trinica’s passion for being a champion of queer stories and desire to amplify my own was so apparent. I simply couldn’t say no. Still, I did my due diligence. Because I’m doing it right, dang it.
I spoke with a couple of Trinica’s clients before signing, and there was just this magical energy about them that further cemented my certainty. Leslie Adame and Katie Chandler, please, if you’re reading this, know you rock and you have a friend for life, and I am SO HAPPY we’re agency siblings.
Expect a lot more content from me in the coming… well, forever.
